30 Weeks

So, I had my 30 week check-in yesterday and honestly, the appointment was so boringly good, that I forgot to write an update. Really, not much to report. Blood pressure is low per usual (98/60) and weight gain is at 22 pounds overall. Dr. Williams did ask me to schedule another growth ultrasound, just as we approach the point at which the abruption occurred in my previous pregnancy. Her hope is to see the health and position of the placenta, as well as make sure Baby is measuring appropriately. I don't mind getting another peak at the little man.

Like I said, things are boringly good! I'll borrow from my sister-in-laws pregnancy blog and offer some questions and answers you might be wondering.

  • How far along? 30 weeks even
  • Maternity clothes? Almost exclusively. Jeff teases me because I'm either wearing a dress or lounge shorts and a tank. There is no middle for now.
  • Stretch marks? I felt so blessed to survive my pregnancy with Nathan without a single mark and (knock on wood) so far this pregnancy has been the same. It's not too late though!
  • Sleep? This has been the toughest part of being pregnant. Most nights, I'm tossing and turning for awhile. Often, I'll be awake for an hour or more in the wee morning hours so I watch a little TV or get on the internet, then go back to bed.
  • Miss Anything? My old summer clothes! Silly, I know, but I miss all my shorts and t-shirts that I usually wear. I like the maternity clothes I've picked out for summer, but I miss having more than five options for outfits. We have two more weddings to attend this summer and every now and then, I look longingly at my pre-baby dresses hanging in the closet.
  • Movement: Yes, as busy as ever!
  • Food cravings: I can't think of anything specific right now, so not really.
  • Anything making you queasy or sick: Nope.
  • Have you started to show yet: No doubt. We went swimming at a popular public pool and I felt like everyone took a turn to stare at the pregnant gal. People have been asking me when I'm due a lot. Most seem to think I should be further along (I'm all belly), but one kind cashier at Fred Meyer told me I have a cute belly (why can't more strangers say kind things like that?!).
  • Labor Signs: I've noticed Braxton Hicks contractions over the last two weeks. They often occur more when I'm busy doing things or not drinking enough fluids. A great reminder to take a break and drink up!
  • Belly Button in or out? I would call it flat right now.
  • Wedding rings on or off? On. I kept them on the entire time with Nathan, so hopefully the same with this little guy.
  • Happy or Moody most of the time: Pretty happy! Jeff does patiently deal with occasional moodiness, but what's abnormal about that?
That's all for now! If you have any questions I've failed to answer, feel free to leave a question or comment below.

Coming Up:
  • Ultrasound on Thursday, August 1st at 10:45am
  • Appointments are every two weeks now! Next one is August 12th.

Christmas 2020

Have yourself a merry little Christmas Let your heart be light From now on Our troubles will be out of sight As a result of the pandemic, the model train festival we typically enjoy this time of year was canceled (thus no pictures with Santa). We missed family and friends this year. The fun energy of the last few school days before Winter Break was not quite the same over Zoom. I missed singing carols in church during month of December.  As the season progressed, I couldn't help but reflect on other times in history where celebrations were small and often just a nuclear family. Times and places where travel was too difficult or too expensive to justify leaving home. For those generations of families, the traditions were as simple as reading the Christmas story together or baking a special bread. In so many ways that was our Christmas this year and by seeking the joy in each moment, we found our hearts lighter.  We visited our favorite local tree farm to find THE TREE.  We...

Tradition

At no other time of the year do I think about "tradition" more than during the holidays, from Thanksgiving through Christmas. I do like the sense of timelessness that traditions afford, reminding us of past Christmases and the people or places we cherish most. As much as I love the traditions of years past and years to come, I think it's healthy to miss or change traditions every now and then. My own childhood was filled with traditions for Thanksgiving and Christmas, as was Jeff's, but I also recall the experiences when traditions were put on hold or changed, sometimes intentionally, and sometimes for reasons beyond our control. I suppose it's the same for all of us as we grow, move, lose, and gain. Not that I go out of my way to disrupt any plans for my family now, but rather, to remind us that life doesn't always go the way it has before and we can enjoy the time together no matter what. Having our own family caused Jeff and I to decide on what would be...

Embracing Joy

I made a goal not too long ago to write something about once a month or so.  As November winds to an end, I have been feeling pressure to put something down.  Trying to steer clear of a simple Thanksgiving post, I've noticed something else that has stuck me as we head into the Christmas season.  The joy, excitement and wonder that children bring to just about everything.   Photo courtesy of Erin's Instagram page We hosted Thanksgiving this year and in order to make room for everyone, and have everyone at least in the same room for dinner we did some serious rearranging of furniture.  We moved a couch basically into our kitchen and used our front room, our library, as we call it, to add a couple tables so everyone could eat more or less in the same room.   While this chore was not at all remarkable, the reaction to it by Nathan and Andrew has stuck with me.  We had moved all the furniture prior to the boys coming home from school....
