This New House

I spent most of the holiday season daydreaming about decorating our new home and hosting big family-style dinners, a vision that felt simultaneously far and distant. Then, just three days after Christmas (and ~104 days after our initial offer), our realtor delivered the key that would let us begin our anxiously awaited next move.

Before even setting foot into the house, Jeff and I made a trip to Home Depot for primer and painting supplies. We had a move in plan that we had spent weeks developing. Even though we have bought a beautiful home with many fine finishes and features, our to-do list is nearly twenty items long. Some are no-brainers and more urgent (painting rooms), while others are dream projects that might not happen for many years. To our benefit, our apartment lease doesn't end until January 31st, giving us a month to tackle these initial projects prior to moving in. Therefore, we wanted to check some of the painting projects of our list first.

The kitchen was a shade of peach that seemed to darken the whole room. Choosing a new color was not easy. A lovely glass mosaic backsplash in shades of brown accents the kitchen. We purchased three sample jars of paint and together vetoed them all (for the kitchen at least, I'm using all three in other rooms). After spying a magazine kitchen with a similar brown color scheme, I suggested we try a green. And with very little other inspiration, we just went for it. Having finished priming and painting on our first weekend of ownership, Jeff and I stepped back to evaluate the color choice. We agreed that neither one of us was head over heels in love with the color, but it did achieve two objectives: lighten and brighten the room and blend in with the brown themed kitchen.

Walls are primed. Doors are not.

Unfortunately, we did discover that every door in the house has been painted a color to match the walls in any given room. Add that to our to-do list. Every door needs to be repainted, but we'll tackle that project slowly (and maybe in warmer weather). In our kitchen, the two peach doors look like pumpkins against our green walls. Oh well.

Feeling accomplished by this first room, we spent our second weekend of ownership priming the master bedroom, which was also too dark for our tastes. We were able to prime the entire space and painted the ceiling a bright white. The ceiling was brown before. I know. Brown ceiling? Yep. Okay, a dark tan. You can come by and see it in Nathan's room which will also need to be painted.

Dark red-orange-brown master bedroom

This weekend's to-do list:
  • Paint the master bedroom. I've chosen a blue-gray color that was previously rejected for the kitchen.
  • Re-install original light fixtures throughout house (~6 total). The sellers had a formal style that prompted them to remove the brushed nickel type lighting fixtures and replace with brown fixtures that have dark glass (leaving many rooms just plain dark). We'll be selling those if you're interested. ;)
  • Unpack books onto shelves. Not a high priority but there are 11 or so boxes of books strewn about the library.

Nathan, 18 months

Can you believe it? Can you believe that Little Man Nate is already 18 months? Nathan's Famous Hot Dog on Halloween. At 18 months, Nathan is 33.25 inches tall and nearly 29 pounds, but mostly, he is on the go. Nathan is curious about the world around him, spending lots of time opening doors or drawers, saying "uh-oh" when he finds something new. I know for certain I will have to buy a new set of measuring cups when we move again, as Nathan has adopted some into his toy collection, while others are just plain MIA. He loves pushing his cars, trucks and lawn mower around the house. He is quickly learning to match shapes with puzzles and point to his nose, ears and belly. He uses sign language to say "please" and "more" as well as ask for "help". We have just started practicing the sign for "thank you" and he seems to be grasping that one. Nathan will put his cup in the refrigerator or sink when he is "all done", and u...

Christmas 2020

Have yourself a merry little Christmas Let your heart be light From now on Our troubles will be out of sight As a result of the pandemic, the model train festival we typically enjoy this time of year was canceled (thus no pictures with Santa). We missed family and friends this year. The fun energy of the last few school days before Winter Break was not quite the same over Zoom. I missed singing carols in church during month of December.  As the season progressed, I couldn't help but reflect on other times in history where celebrations were small and often just a nuclear family. Times and places where travel was too difficult or too expensive to justify leaving home. For those generations of families, the traditions were as simple as reading the Christmas story together or baking a special bread. In so many ways that was our Christmas this year and by seeking the joy in each moment, we found our hearts lighter.  We visited our favorite local tree farm to find THE TREE.  We...

The Drive

I love our new home in Battle Ground!  However, I am still a little unsure about living in Battle Ground.  Battle Ground itself seems nice, just a bit further out than I ever imagined I would live.  Six months ago we had a cute little NE Portland home, where we could walk to Breakside Brewery or Podnah's BBQ Pit.  There were multiple parks close by and despite the energy of the city we had a peaceful backyard retreat to relax in.    Now, it may seem strange, but having a 20-25 minute commute seems like an eternity for me.  Not since our first year of marriage have I had to commute more than 15 minutes.  It was the trek across Lake Washington  from West Seattle to Kirkland that made me vow to always have a short commute.  While I do not mind the extra time to make phone calls or listen to some talk radio, I can't decide if the drive is peaceful and relaxing or just a slog to and from the country.  I imagine it will tu...
