Seven Months and Counting

I cannot imagine a better way to end the year 2011 than two weeks off with Jeff and Nathan. We visited with family and spent many hours ignoring the piles of student work that I brought home to grade. Since the start of 2012, we have enjoyed more time together as a family as Jeff is working fewer hours at Fred Meyer. We have also fallen into a strong routine in the afternoons/evening which encourages the calmness around the house. Jeff and I are both busy with work during the week, but try to enjoy every minute of the weekends. The cold weather outside inspires us to spend more time inside, reading, playing happily, napping and just being a family. With MLK Day this past week and a snow day, I feel really lucky to have so much extra time with Nathan and Jeff.

Speaking of Nathan, he is learning so many new skills lately! Around the holidays, he mastered the art of sitting up on his own, which is often his preferred position now. Unfortunately, he cannot get up without our help still. I keep hoping that he will figure out how to get from his belly to a sitting position, but like most new skills, I have reasons to be thankful he cannot.

Also, Nate has spent the last three or four weeks getting himself up on all fours, but is not quite crawling. Instead, he rocks back and forth and then usually ends up scooting backwards across the room. Each time he gets into crawling position, we clap our hands and get excited. Nathan loves watching people clap hands, so he then gets excited and laughs as he rocks some more. In anticipation of his impending mobility, we took advantage of a sale and some coupons to buy a couple safety gates which will be installed when he really starts moving. As we await the crawling phase, Nathan is also learning how to stand, nearly on his own. He loves to stand on our laps or the ground with our hands nearby for support. I can hardly believe that we are not too far from walking!

Nathan has a hearty appetite, which is not surprising, I'm sure. In addition to nursing or bottles, he has a lunch and dinner everyday. These meals are both 4 ounces of fruit or vegetables which he eats quickly. He can become impatient if we take too long to prepare the next bite, banging his hands on the tray or even reaching for our hands and pulling the spoon closer to his mouth. Sometimes, he is still not satisfied and wants oatmeal as well. I was just commenting to Jeff that I'm not sure if I've ever seen Nathan turn down food that's been offered. Is he ever full? We end each meal with a couple of puffs, snacks that dissolve in his mouth and help him practice putting food into his own mouth.

In addition to purchasing baby gates, we bought a new car seat for Nathan. Carrying him around in the infant seat is just becoming too difficult for me and he is nearly too big for the old seat. After some of my own research, and some research on the part of my Uncle Dennis, Jeff and I decided on the Graco My Ride 65. This popular car seat enables Nathan to sit "rear-facing" until 40 pounds, a higher weight limit than similar seats. Government safety regulations recommend children sit rear-facing for as long as possible and we hope that high weight limit will allow that. Once the seat is turned to "forward-facing", it's usable until he reaches 65 pounds. We hope that we can use this seat for many years to come. Given that the new car seat is much larger and doesn't transport easily, we will need to purchase a second one for Jeff's car in the near distant future. In the mean time, Jeff will continue to use the infant car seat. Buying the car seat yesterday really highlighted a bigger problem of which Jeff has blogged about previously: we need a bigger car. It is our hope and prayer that Jeff's job will continue next year (and maybe even be full time) so that we can finally make that purchase. The new seat fits in my car about the same as the old one, which means the front passenger seat is still not comfortable for long trips.

Last, but not least, I noticed yesterday that Nathan is finally getting his first tooth! Like all milestones, I am both excited and nostalgic for him. My sweet boy is growing up so fast and I will truly miss his gummy baby smiles!

Nathan, 18 months

Can you believe it? Can you believe that Little Man Nate is already 18 months? Nathan's Famous Hot Dog on Halloween. At 18 months, Nathan is 33.25 inches tall and nearly 29 pounds, but mostly, he is on the go. Nathan is curious about the world around him, spending lots of time opening doors or drawers, saying "uh-oh" when he finds something new. I know for certain I will have to buy a new set of measuring cups when we move again, as Nathan has adopted some into his toy collection, while others are just plain MIA. He loves pushing his cars, trucks and lawn mower around the house. He is quickly learning to match shapes with puzzles and point to his nose, ears and belly. He uses sign language to say "please" and "more" as well as ask for "help". We have just started practicing the sign for "thank you" and he seems to be grasping that one. Nathan will put his cup in the refrigerator or sink when he is "all done", and u...

Christmas 2020

Have yourself a merry little Christmas Let your heart be light From now on Our troubles will be out of sight As a result of the pandemic, the model train festival we typically enjoy this time of year was canceled (thus no pictures with Santa). We missed family and friends this year. The fun energy of the last few school days before Winter Break was not quite the same over Zoom. I missed singing carols in church during month of December.  As the season progressed, I couldn't help but reflect on other times in history where celebrations were small and often just a nuclear family. Times and places where travel was too difficult or too expensive to justify leaving home. For those generations of families, the traditions were as simple as reading the Christmas story together or baking a special bread. In so many ways that was our Christmas this year and by seeking the joy in each moment, we found our hearts lighter.  We visited our favorite local tree farm to find THE TREE.  We...

The Drive

I love our new home in Battle Ground!  However, I am still a little unsure about living in Battle Ground.  Battle Ground itself seems nice, just a bit further out than I ever imagined I would live.  Six months ago we had a cute little NE Portland home, where we could walk to Breakside Brewery or Podnah's BBQ Pit.  There were multiple parks close by and despite the energy of the city we had a peaceful backyard retreat to relax in.    Now, it may seem strange, but having a 20-25 minute commute seems like an eternity for me.  Not since our first year of marriage have I had to commute more than 15 minutes.  It was the trek across Lake Washington  from West Seattle to Kirkland that made me vow to always have a short commute.  While I do not mind the extra time to make phone calls or listen to some talk radio, I can't decide if the drive is peaceful and relaxing or just a slog to and from the country.  I imagine it will tu...
