Let's Talk About Sex (of the Baby that is)

February 2nd is the day we will finally find out whether this little mango is a boy or a girl! Since we've both been anxious to find out lately, I've been reading about Old Wives' Tales that claim to predict the sex. So, while we wait a few more days for the answer, here are a few tales and the results. Read through and let me know what you think!
  • Chinese Gender Predictor: Using my age and month of conception, the chart says to be over 90% accurate in predicting baby's gender. My result: GIRL
  • The eye test is when a “V” or “branches” appear when you pull down the skin under your left eye. If you see a “V” or “branches” in the white part, you’re having a girl. If you see the "V" in the right eye if it's a boy. My result: Right eye = BOY
  • If the baby’s heart rate is above 140 bpm, it is said that the baby will be a girl. If it is under 140 bpm, then it will be a boy. My result: At our last appointment, the heart rate was 155 bpm = GIRL
  • When your face gets fuller and rounder when pregnant, it means you’re going to have a girl. If your face is long and narrow, it’s a boy. My result: Well, I haven't noticed any face shape changes (thankfully) so I guess = BOY
  • If you are carrying high with a big, round belly, you are having a girl. If you are carrying low with a smaller belly that sticks straight out, it’s a boy. My result: This one is hard because I don't have much of a belly yet, but given that the roundness seems to take up my entire torso, Jennifer and I would choose high with a big, round belly = GIRL
  • The Mayan tale adds the mother's age at conception and the year of conception. If the result is a even number then mom is having a girl. If the result is an odd number then a boy is on the way! My result: Age 29 + year 2010 = BOY
  • If you have acne while pregnant, it’s a girl. It’s thought that acne during pregnancy is caused by the extra hormones. My result: Acne has been a life long problem, but I guess = GIRL
  • If you had a smooth pregnancy with no morning sickness, it’s a boy. If you were sick or felt really nauseous during your pregnancy, count on a girl. My result: smooth sailing = BOY (although I have heard this one the other way around too)
  • If you are craving salty foods while pregnant, you can count on having a boy. If you crave sweets, fruit, and orange juice, you are having a little girl. My result: sweets, fruits and orange juice = GIRL
  • If the dad-to-be gains weight while you are pregnant, it’s a girl. If he doesn’t gain weight, you’re having a boy. My result: Well...I'll have to check with Jeff later and see if he's willing to divulge the answer!
  • If your legs get really big, you’re having a boy. If your legs stay in shape and lean, it’s a girl. My result: It might be too early, but again, I haven't noticed too much change = GIRL
  • If the hair on your legs has been growing at record speeds, you might be having a boy. My result: I was just noticing the opposite a few days ago, so perhaps = GIRL

  1. Boy or girl please name your child after a fruit. I love how you have been calling the baby by it's size in fruit comparisons! I love you, Jeff, and your little Mango!

(maybe thats how baby apple got named!)

Holidays and Hospitals

Thanksgiving In the hospital still in Husky gear. This has been an eventful holiday season so far with two trips to the emergency room.  The first was a post Thanksgiving treat. We had a wonderful Thanksgiving up in Maple Valley.  We spent it with Erin's dad, her family, and my sister (though we were a bit disappointed she didn't bring her latest beau).  It was a nice holiday as usual.  It was  followed up on Friday by a trip for me and my dad to Husky Stadium to see the Dawgs win yet another Apple Cup. However, shortly after we arrived at home is when the "emergency" occurred.  Erin's dad has a sizable yoga ball, and Erin and Nathan were playing with it rolling it back and forth and the like.  Nathan figured out it was just the right size to plop down on and sort of bounce off.  That turned out to be great fun until instead of landing on his feet or bouncing off the ball again, he took one bounce and landing chin first on the hardwood...

Christmas 2020

Have yourself a merry little Christmas Let your heart be light From now on Our troubles will be out of sight As a result of the pandemic, the model train festival we typically enjoy this time of year was canceled (thus no pictures with Santa). We missed family and friends this year. The fun energy of the last few school days before Winter Break was not quite the same over Zoom. I missed singing carols in church during month of December.  As the season progressed, I couldn't help but reflect on other times in history where celebrations were small and often just a nuclear family. Times and places where travel was too difficult or too expensive to justify leaving home. For those generations of families, the traditions were as simple as reading the Christmas story together or baking a special bread. In so many ways that was our Christmas this year and by seeking the joy in each moment, we found our hearts lighter.  We visited our favorite local tree farm to find THE TREE.  We...

January Appt

So this morning I rushed off to a monthly appointment, my first since "going public". Jeff decided not to go, since he describes these appointments as boring. I like to think of them as boringly good! As a result, there is not a whole lot to report. I am 17 weeks, 2 days today which means I'm in my last week of the fourth month. I have gained 6 pounds since the beginning of this pregnancy, which is a little hard to take. Having been the same weight since high school, this weight gaining thing is going to take some getting used to. One of my students described me as being "round in the middle and skinny everywhere else" (see today's photo for proof). I guess that doesn't sound so bad. I'm doing my best to remind myself that this is a necessary part of the process. My blood pressure was slightly elevated from normal, but the nurse said that could be a result of my rush to arrive in time. Altogether, nothing too much to worry about. I did mention to the...
